DrSmith    

Dr. Karen Smith

Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1982 with her Doctor of Optometry degree. She then completed a Residency Program in Paediatrics at the University of Houston in the summer of 1983.

After graduation, Dr. Smith was very active teaching at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry, working at the Vision Institute of Canada, and co-chairing the Ontario Association of Optometry’s Paediatric and Vision Therapy Committee. During that time, she also worked at several offices, in various locations for nine years as an associate Optometrist.

In 1992, she set up her own very busy and successful Optometric office in North Oakville. Dr. Smith continued her education and in 1991 passed a 100-hour course in the Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease (TMOD).

In the summer of 2008, Dr. Smith opened up a new office on the shores of Lake Ontario in beautiful Bronte (west Oakville). She is extremely excited about her new endeavour and welcomes both previous and new patients at her new location.

She has clinical experience in the areas of:

Dr. Curtis Akerman

Dr. Curtis Akerman obtained his Honours Bachelor of Science degree with Minors in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Waterloo in 1995 and graduated from SUNY College of Optometry in New York City in 1999. He has been certified in therapeutic management of ocular disease including glaucoma treatment since he graduated and is licensed to practise full scope Optometry in Ontario.

After graduation, Dr. Akerman practised in New York City for three years before moving to Scottsdale, Arizona where he provided comprehensive vision care for the next eight years in both private practice and hospital settings. He relocated to Milton in 2010 with his wife and three children and has been providing service in private practices in Concord and Brampton for the past five years.

Dr. Akerman has experience in glaucoma research and has lectured at National Optometric conferences in the United States about advances in glaucoma care and technology. While in Arizona, he also functioned as a Contact Lens Lead Optometrist in a large multidisciplinary health care management practise, where he was responsible for performing complicated contact lens fittings including keractoconus and post-surgical contact lens management. He also has worked as a Low Vision Optometrist, providing specialty exams and services to the vision impaired.

Dr. Akerman is a certified Corneal Refractive Therapy and Ortho-Keratology contact lens fitter, providing non-surgical refractive correction and stabilization to adult and pediatric patients, and has more than fifteen years in refractive surgery co-management, including experience as Clinical Director at a Laser Vision Correction Centre.

Dr. Akerman is an active volunteer, having traveled throughout the United States and twice to Nicaragua to provide eye exams and glasses to people living in underprivileged areas. He was also a member of "Icemen that Care", a volunteer group of hockey players that provide aid to children and families in need in Arizona. Since moving to Milton he has remained an active member of the community, serving as Secretary of the Milton Minor Hockey Association Board of Directors for the past three years, and receiving the President's award in 2015 for volunteer service. He has also coached hockey for the past seven seasons in addition to having coached minor baseball and lacrosse. He is excited to join our office and is looking forward to serving our patients and our community for years to come!
